Incredibly Detailed Race Maps of US: NYC, Los Angeles, Detroit

Race map of NYC. White: blue dots; African American: green dots; Asian: red; Latino: orange; all others: brown Dustin Cable at University of Virginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service used race data from the 2010 U.S. census to make a comprehensive map of geographical ethnic distribution, as featured in Wired. To give you an idea of the scale of this map, Cable pulled from 308,745,538 data points (each dot representing one person) resulting in 7 GB of data. The map is made of 1.2 million PNG files to account for varying levels of zoom. Here in New York City, you can see some general patterns at a city-wide level. The Asian population in Chinatown, Sunset Park, Woodside and Flushing. White in the Upper West and Upper East sides of Manhattan, Staten Island, Greenwich Village/Chelsea/Meatpacking and portions of Williamsburg, Red Hook and Greenpoint.
